Seeing is Believing: The Crafty Struggles of a Glasses-Obsessed Maker

To a crafter, the eyes aren't just the windows to the soul—they're the blueprints, the color swatches, and the precision tools. When my vision goes blurry, my creativity follows suit. I get cranky, my head throbs, and I start snapping at innocent bystanders (sorry, family!).

So, after squinting at my latest project like an old-timey detective trying to crack a case, I finally made an appointment with the eye doctor. Every time I go, I walk in feeling like a vision-challenged gremlin and leave feeling like a young, sharp-eyed stud-nette. Turns out, my eyesight is still hanging in there. Just need my trusty reading glasses—which, by the way, I have stashed everywhere: kitchen, bathroom, car, purse, maybe even the freezer (don't judge). I hate searching for them. They should just magically appear like craft supplies I swear I didn’t order.

But here’s the catch: I can’t walk with my reading glasses on because distance vision turns into an impressionist painting. Enter bifocals—the unsung heroes of my crafting world. I can glance down at my phone or crochet hooks and still avoid walking into walls. Practical magic.

Recently, I was at the Virginia Artisan Craft Fair at Mustang Sally Brewing Company in Chantilly, and we were wrapping up our products to come back home when two really nice ladies came up to us. They had not seen that there were vendors in the back of the brewery. We were so happy to see them, and they tried our Whipped Body Butters and bought three 8-ounce jars of Mediterranean, Sage and Rosemary, and White Tea, among other things. Everything went well—except that on my way home, I looked at the Square receipt and saw that I rang up two Shampoo Bars of Sage and Rosemary, but I only remembered bagging one. To this day, I have no idea why I looked at that transaction in particular. I don’t check transactions for fun. I was driving, so I had to wait until I got home to contact the client. But when I got home, she had already contacted me first! I was so relieved she did, and I refunded her as quickly as possible.

As a side note, I had never refunded a client through Square, and I was so relieved that it was an easy and straightforward process. And why did I ring the shampoo bar twice? Yep—you guessed it. I wasn’t wearing my glasses. I am a mess without them.

Recently, tragedy struck. I stepped on my favorite glasses—white frames, wide, quirky, and compliment magnets. So, off to Zenni I went. I've used them before and love their style, quality, and prices. This time, I went bold: red frames. Why red? Well, I once had a pair of red glasses that Adam (my resident glasses enthusiast) really liked, and since I’m always up for bonus points, I figured, why not?

Now here I am, waiting like a kid for Santa, except it's Valentine's Day, and instead of chocolate, I'm hoping for a box with my sassy new specs. If they arrive today, it'll be true love. If not...well, Adam, you might need to step up your game with the chocolates.

Here's to seeing life clearly—and crafting without the squint-induced headaches. Cheers to the unsung hero: the perfect pair of glasses!
